Downloads Detective Browser Companion 1.0.0
===========================================

The desktop app works without this optional browser companion.

What the companion adds
-----------------------
- Chooses a clean filename before Chrome/Edge commits a download, so the browser's own Downloads history points at the real filename.
- Remembers Ask Once rules per website + filename family.
- Stages an existing target for rollback before a browser-side replacement.
- Lets you move the original completed download to a folder you choose from the extension popup.
- Keeps a Move… action in the extension popup as a fallback.

Recommended setup
-----------------
1. Run BUILD_RELEASE.cmd successfully when testing from the source tree. Customer packages already contain the verified self-contained BrowserHost.
2. Open Downloads Detective > Settings > Browser Companion & Background.
3. Click Set up Chrome… or Set up Edge….
4. Downloads Detective installs and self-tests the stable native host, registers it, opens the Extension folder, copies its path, and asks the browser to open its Extensions page.
5. If Chrome/Edge opens but the Extensions page does not: click the address bar, type chrome://extensions/ for Chrome or edge://extensions/ for Edge, and press Enter.
6. On the Extensions page, turn on Developer mode. In Chrome the toggle is in the TOP-RIGHT. Then click Load unpacked in the TOP-LEFT and select the opened Extension folder.
7. Click Re-check connection in Downloads Detective. It should show the detected extension version and native host Ready status.

Chrome/Edge intentionally require explicit user approval before an unpacked extension can be activated. Downloads Detective automates everything around that approval rather than trying to bypass browser security.

Move completed downloads
------------------------
Open the Downloads Detective extension from the browser toolbar, find the completed download, and choose Move original…. Pick a destination and Downloads Detective moves the original file out of Downloads.

Background operation
--------------------
For always-on naming rules, enable system-tray background mode. You can also choose Start with Windows.

Privacy
-------
Browser rules and connection heartbeat status are stored locally. The companion sends the local native host only the download URL/domain, intended filename and local path needed to apply your rule. Nothing is uploaded to Friction Tamer.
